Master upholsterer Barry Griffith’s career began in the early 1980s as an apprentice for R.W. Toothill. It was whilst with R.W. Toothill that Barry mastered the modern skills and techniques of upholstery.
Today the skills Barry has mastered help to provide a high quality of service for an ever-growing customer base that welcomes the work he does. Barry also gained his City and Guilds Qualification at Newcastle College of Technology where he studied upholstery and re-upholstery for 3 years. The course provided a practical understanding of the traditional methods of upholstery. These techniques are important as an understanding of methods helps with work when dealing with the various antique pieces that come into the workshop.
Interior Design and Reupholstery Advice
Barry’s wife Jo Griffiths provides a complete interior design service and is on hand for expert upholstery advice and any assistance required with colour coordination, texture, and fabrics. Jo also provides a home service where she will come to you and will call with a large range of fabric samples from various companies. Jo can provide a full estimate for a single room or a complete home makeover, with a full consultation at your home where she will go through the full procedure with you.

If I could give ten stars I would. We had a new headboard made, and the bed re done. We had planned on throwing the bed out, even though it was expensive. However, Jo and Barry did an amazing job, and it looks like new. They came when they said, did the job when we were on holiday and were happy to come and organise it even though we were away, and we came back to a beautiful new bed and headboard. Great price, great service, lovely people and a huge display of fabrics in their shop. Craftsmanship at work, just when you thought we had reached a throw away society......

In 2024 Barry recovered the seat pads from our six dining room cantilever chairs which looked amazing when finished. This year (2025) we had the backs of those chairs recovered and they look equally as good, we absolutely love the result, it’s like we have whole new dining room set, the transformation has elevated the seats to another level with the fabric and finish. I’ve posted a picture of one of the newly refurbished chairs (sorry no ‘before’ pictures).

A brilliant experience from start to finish. Jo took me through the booking process with good humour and no hard sell. She listened well to what we were after, and made the process very easy. Communication was excellent at all stages. And the finished result is superb - top quality craftsmanship, and some first rate details that make a real difference to the sofa going on looking good with family wear and tear (sleeve caps that are long enough to tuck under the back cushions, hidden velcro to stop them sliding off, option of additional cushion covers for wash-and-wearing). A much loved but very tatty sofa has been given a new lease of life. Really delighted, will definitely use again - 100% recommendation 👍
