1930s Chair in houndstooth by Linwood-wing

1930s Chair

The strong shape and sturdy lines of this chair made me fall in love with it. Our customer chose a beautiful Linwood houndstooth fabric with a gentle stone and lichen colourway. The build quality of this era of furniture manufacturer is impeccable – again, sturdy and strong quality. The equivalent, if you could buy one new, would be over £5000. And it’s great to restore rather than make new – a delight. Matching sofa below.

Swivel Chair

Deep T Swivel Chair

How about a bespoke contemporary chair made just for you, just the way you like it. Made to order to your exacting requirements. The Deep T chair can be made static with a choice of legs or – like this one – it can swivel, ideal for a corner to allow the chair to slightly turn for conversations or serious watching TV and set in a wider area like a large window to allow full view or change of light.

We make these chairs to order in any fabric from our catalogue or supply your own fabric. This piece was ordered with thick bolster cushions. You can specify shapes and styles of the cushion shape and filling consistency.

The styling is contemporary so it will fit with a traditional home or a modern home.

Office Chair

Office Chair For Home Study

Rather clever what our customer did with this office chair for her study.

Instead of the typical plain or blue (boring) fabric, she selected this high-quality deco style fabric to create a more soothing to look at and stylish office study chair.

We also reupholstered a matching chest footstool.

Updating Leather Chair and Sofa using Linwood Fabric

A clever idea this; our customer has a wonderful set of leather chair and sofa. The seat and back cushions were remade in a beautiful Linwood weave fabric to transform a dated leather set to a modern contemporary and stylish sofa and chair.

Linwood Fabric is a very high-quality fabric at a great cost. All our fabrics are first quality and always upholstery grade. These fabrics are superior to the mass-produced fabric used for retail outlets. Therefore when you upgrade and reupholster you are creating a top line piece of furniture that will last for a long time.

We made the new scatter cushions too – also in Linwood Fabric.

Reupholster and Restoration – Detail of the quality of work

Here are two occasional chairs we restored and reupholstered.

I’ve added nice close-up photographs to show the detailed quality of our work.

I am often asked ‘what will it look like when it comes back’.  Our reupholstery service is not a second option to buying new. When we restore a chair or sofa etc we re-manufacture to the highest standard.  In some cases actually better than the original mass produced furniture or as close as we can when restoring ancient and antique furniture.  For example, we will use tacks and horse hair to match ancient reupholstery work.

1930's Fluted back chairs

1930’s Fluted Back sofa

We often talk here about the value of buying older quality furniture and restoring it to your style and taste.

This 1930’s Fluted back sofa is a perfect example. With a matching pair of chairs.

Our customer selected the combination of carved and plain high-quality velore to create a stunning one-off showpiece that you can sit on and look at to enjoy.  And of course, if you were to order a new version of this quality the total investment will be about double.

Drivers seat at the top – is that the correct expression?? – Captain maybe 🙂 And a bench seat for the passengers.

Caravan Chair
Caravan Sofa

Above is a caravan set. The set was bespoke made to fit the caravan but was free standing (not fixed). Our customer wanted the chair to be boosted with a new medium/firm foam cushion and we heavily wrapped the foam cushion in a fibre Dacron to produce a soft touch but firm comfortable feel.

The whole set was removed and reupholstered in a modern stain resistant high-quality upholstery grade fabric. It looks smart and modern and will withstand the holiday caravan use for many years.

Traditional wingback chair restored and updated with an ‘on-trend’ fabric.

We often talk with customers who want to update or change the fabric on a chair or sofa.

The hurdle often can be the price.  It costs more to reupholster say a Next Interiors or Laura Ashley chair than it does to buy a new one.  The great thing about the likes of Next Interiors or Laura Ashley is that they are ‘on-trend’ and the fabrics used are very lovely to look at.  The negative is that they are made to a price and probably mass produced in China or India – nothing wrong with that as it gives us a great deal – but they are made to a price and engineered to last just a few years with average use.

For value for money and a piece of furniture that will last much longer your better off buying an older quality chair and investing in a restoration of your design.

Here is an example of a fairly standard traditional wingback chair restored and updated with an ‘on-trend’ fabric.  Costs a bit more, take a little more time to instigate but made to your style using British craftsmen and quality fabrics.  There is no other like it!

This fine example of an Ercol Chair.

Always a pleasure to work with. Our customer chose a plaid shade to coordinate with the bentwood English elm, a perfect fresh look.

Ercol Chair

A little about Ercol

Since 1944 Ercol has produced chairs with a bentwood frame and an arched back supporting delicate spindles. The wood selected was English elm – a wood previously thought impossible to bend because it distorted.

Wood Restoration

We restore Ercol Bentwood Chairs and sofas including restoration of the wood frame. We clean down, check joints and re-wax. This keeps the originality but protects the wood better, brings out the lustre and keeps them solid for daily use.

On the bench this week, Cadillac Car Seats.

Car seats are not something we reupholster too often.

We usually only work on car seat restoration rather that regular repairs etc.

This customer asked us to restore the front and back seats of his ‘desert find’ Cadillac from Arizona where it sat for 30 years.

This is an interesting historic car seat restoration.

Real leather hide was requested to replace the original blue and grey, the cloth now almost turned to dust.

Here are the Cadillac Eldorado seats waiting to be stripped down.

Photos of the completed Cadillac Car Seats are below.

Really ‘on-trend’ Retro Furniture

Some chairs just have ‘IT’ and this sweet 1960’s easy chair I love.

Really neat so it fits in our modern homes. A delicate colour chosen by our customer in a beautiful to the touch wool mix by Linwood. Very fashionable at the moment, will always be a classic and very comfortable too.

The word retro signifies looking backward. When designers, manufacturers and customers speak about retro furniture, we are referring to a style of furniture that looks back with nostalgia and pays homage to styles that were popular in the past. Currently furniture designers are inspired by 60s and 70s – this one is the genuine item.

Retro Chair

Namely, retro furniture was popular in the decades of 1950s, 1960s, 1970s. Recently, the industry has added the 80s to the list, which personally I am shocked at. I love 1960’s like this chair but the 80s?
