The hurdle often can be the price. It costs more to reupholster say a Next Interiors or Laura Ashley chair than it does to buy a new one. The great thing about the likes of Next Interiors or Laura Ashley is that they are ‘on-trend’ and the fabrics used are very lovely to look at. The negative is that they are made to a price and probably mass produced in China or India – nothing wrong with that as it gives us a great deal – but they are made to a price and engineered to last just a few years with average use.
For value for money and a piece of furniture that will last much longer your better off buying an older quality chair and investing in a restoration of your design.
Here is an example of a fairly standard traditional wingback chair restored and updated with an ‘on-trend’ fabric. Costs a bit more, take a little more time to instigate but made to your style using British craftsmen and quality fabrics. There is no other like it!
Ready to serve and look stylish in any home for another 100 years
We restore antique furniture as originally built using tie-in coil springs and modernised wadding with rubberised ‘horse hair’. So the result is a classic handmade piece of historic furniture you can use every day and will last far longer than a modern version. I’m in love!
This one is dark teak framed chair with a heavy rubberised and foam seat pad which is very firm to sit on but extremely comfortable for all sizes and weights – adults and children alike.
A super quality chair that is part of a ten-set we reupholstered in a beige weave durable fabric for a long dinner service!
Lovely!
“I am thrilled with the result, they are wonderful. I have ordered new blinds and am looking for “pieces” to finish dressing the room.
I would thank you all for your friendliness and professional attitude.
I would have no problem recommending you to anyone thinking of reupholstering furniture.”
Best wishes,
Customer in Manfield near Darlington.

Reupholstered in a stylish woven fabric.
We recently restored an antique fireside chair in this leather hide. There was just enough leather to cover this footstool also. So here it is about completed waiting on the bench for the finishing touches of upholstery round headed pins in each corner. See the ‘Rolls Royce’ corner stitch in the detailed photo – Lovely!
It was in bad condition but the frame structure was good and most importantly the owner found it so very comfortable. Indeed we had to wait till after a comfortable Christmas to collect and start the restoration.
Many of us have modern leather chairs – we repair and reupholster a lot of them. Sometimes the ‘leather’ is not actually leather though. Modern factory produced leather furniture can sometimes be a treatment cover to look, feels and smell like leather but its not. Sometimes the leather is only on the parts you touch and sometimes it is very thin rolled leather.
The ‘leather tanned hide’ we use is about 1/4 cm thick, tanned from a genuine hide and will last as long as Sherlock Holmes leather library chair.
We work for ‘Toby Carvery’ through the North East and many of our amazing Pubs, Bars, Hotels and Restaurants. Commercial work is completed as and when required to fit with the business schedules. Nearly all jobs will need to be uplifted to our workshop and in some cases we can provide loan chairs – for a hotel for example so you can keep on trading.
Here is an example of a restaurant where the designer included some upholstered button back walls – quite effective.
Edwardian chair fully restored and upholstered in fabric supplied by customer.
The Kingston Chair High Back Dining Chair features clean contours and a scrolled back. The Kingston is an elegant design that is suited to most homes. The quality of this style of chair varies by manufacturer, indeed low price copies of the original can be found online. The better levels of quality are worth reupholstering. We strip to the frame, check and repair, re-web and spring, re-foam/pad and upholster as required.
Great to work on an original.
Our customer designed the large pleated skirt that hides the legs to produce a very stylish looking chair. The fabric chosen was a ‘Linen Look’ Aqua Clean fabric that can be cleaned with just water. I want some just like this!
As it started.
Removeing the dislodged coil springs.
Frame re-structured and webbed. Deep button back completed. Spring. were re-tied in

All our replacement cushions are made to order in our workshop, bespoke to each case and your preferences. We fit the replacement foams correctly to your cushion cases and can collect and deliver if required. The replacement foams are fire retardant and come with a fibre wrap and a stockinette outer for a soft touch.
Depending on the size and shape the price for an average 26″ x 23″ x 6″ is in the region of £125 each. A large two seater sofa pair of seat foams tend to be about £275 – less if we can. Please contact us for an accurate price – remember to include dimensions and your location if you require collection and delivery. Our prices include the correct fitting to the case but not the disposal of the old foams. *Due to recent price increases, I am afraid, please check with us for the updated pricing.
Above is a fixed-seat leather sofa. We replaced all the seat foams and boosted the arm foams.
Sold from our showroom as soon as it went on the shop floor.
A cosy cottage in North Yorkshire had a a perfectly proportioned two seater cottage sofa but it was passed its best. We restored, re-padded and reupholstered in a fresh new fire retardant fabric to ‘as-new’ standard. Cosy!
