Barker sofa

A Modern Take on a Chesterfield Sofa.

I recognised this sofa as soon as I saw it. Originally sold through Barker and Stonehouse furniture shop back in the 1980s. It’s a quality piece of classic furniture, basically a relaxed oversized Chesterfields sofa without the deep buttons. Originally retailed in a Kilim fabric that was slightly rough to the touch, a bit like a Kilim rug, they were super cool, stylish, massive and expensive.

We have reupholstered at least two in the last year, therefore, we know the quality of the frame. This example, our customer purchased for £50 🙂 Now it looks like a few thousand pounds. Stunning.

Dining Chair Leather Close

Leather Dining Chairs

These dining chairs were reupholstered in white grained leather as requested by the customer. Previously upholstered in the cloth – see the original image below. We use only the finest Scottish leather, it looks amazing, feels fantastic and smells really lovely. The quality of these hides is way better than most manufactured leather furniture. The leather is 4mm thick so will take generations of use. They were boardroom chairs owned by the customer. We transformed into white for the dining room.

At first glance, you may be forgiven for thinking this is just an old dated dining chair. Look at the frame, particularly the curved and jointed front curve of the arms, the sheen of the varnish. This is a quality designer chair. Reupholstered in a high-grade Scottish leather it took two hides to complete the set of six. Now an upgraded design piece that will sit well in a modern or contemporary home.

Ikea Sofa in Blue Plaid

Ikea Sofa

An Ikea sofa? Although it tends to be more cost-effective to reupholster high end furniture, retro, collectors and antique furniture we are more often now restoring, altering and reupholstering originally lower costed soft furniture, like this Ikea sofa; which looks and feels absolutely delightful.

Reasons vary; from the customer just likes the style and it fits the room to not able to find the style they like and sometimes just wanted to design their own sofa reusing an established frame for environmental reasons.

The benefit too is that once restored this sofa is something else. We strip the original sofa to its bare frame, fix and amend and make good all the internals then reupholster from there. Fabrics and materials are of a much higher standard and quality than those used for furniture manufactured to a tight budget. Therefore here we have a bespoke, customised hand-built high-quality sofa made in Britain that will last a generation. Is it still an Ikea sofa?

Chair Originally From Barker & Stonehouse Chair

This is a fifteen your old good quality chair from Barker & Stonehouse that our customer wanted to replace but he could not find a suitable sized, styled and comfortable chair. So they came to us to have it restored and reupholstered. This is a great option – you can select a new fabric and even adjust the seating and detail. I think the orange fabric is a great choice.

1930s Mustard Sofa

Authentic 1930s Sofa, Shell Back Sofa

I may use this word too often, ‘stunning’ and I may say this too often, ‘I want to take it home!’ Both apply here. We restored this 1930s sofa and reupholstered in a mustard Linwood Omega Italian Velvet. The quality, detail and styling are exquisite.

Our customer looked for this exact style for some time, originally made in Denmark, she found it on eBay and shipped it to us. It’s art you can sit on.
